Nyakach Region

Our Background

Serving the communities of Nyakach, Western Kenya

Nyakach is a sub-county and constituency in Kisumu County, Western Kenya, situated along the shores of Lake Victoria. It is a region of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and close-knit communities.

Nyakach Pets Lovers is a non-profit, registered community-based organization operating in tiny, remote, rural villages. We focus on the welfare of pets (dogs and cats), designed to operate at the grassroots level with community participation.

Our work embraces the 'One Health' approach, acknowledging that a healthy pet is vital for a healthy, secure community. We collaborate with local authorities, veterinary departments, and the general public to manage pet health through education, vaccination, and responsible ownership—transforming the view of free-roaming pets from pests to community assets.

Our Vision

A compassionate and secure community where every pet is healthy, valued, and treated with respect, contributing to a harmonious coexistence between humans and animals.

Our Mission

To improve the well-being of pets in Nyakach by providing accessible veterinary care, promoting humane treatment through education, and implementing sustainable, community-led management of stray pet populations.

Our Objectives

Focused goals that drive our impact in the community

Disease Prevention

To reduce the incidences of rabies and other zoonotic diseases through annual, community-based, free or subsidized vaccination campaigns.

Population Control

To implement humane, sustainable spay/neuter initiatives to manage the stray pet populations effectively.

Education and Awareness

To train the community, particularly children, on responsible pet ownership, pet care, and safety to prevent animal cruelty and pet bites.

Emergency Care

To provide basic, low-cost or free veterinary first aid for injured or sick village pets.

Community Support

To help owners secure their pets from predators, improve nutrition, and create shelter using locally available materials.

Collaboration

Partnering with local authorities, veterinary departments, and the general public to ensure compliance and support.

Our Philosophy

The core principles that guide everything we do

One Health, One Welfare

Acknowledging that the health of a community is dependent on the health of its animals and environment. When pets thrive, communities thrive.

Cultural Sensitivity and Practicality

Understanding that pets in African villages often live relatively independently but serve crucial roles as guardians. Our approach respects this independence while mitigating neglect.

Empowerment Over Dependency

Training local community members (paravets) to take ownership of animal welfare, rather than relying solely on external aid. Sustainable change comes from within.

Compassion in Action

Treating all animals as sentient beings worthy of dignity and comfort. Every action we take is rooted in genuine care and respect for life.
